time and making time

time, as we know it, is a finite thing. there are 24 hours in a day, 60 minutes in an hour, 60 seconds in a minute, and so on and so forth.

how many times have we said "there just isn't enough time!" with arms thrown up in defeat? how many times have we shaken our heads saying "there's too much to do and not enough time to do it?" how many times have we said "i was supposed to _____________ (fill in the blank) but i ran out of time."?

an untold number of times i'm sure. and yet isn't it strange that we say this as if we don't know how much time we have? oh i'm not saying this in terms of life expectancy, or other similar things. that, of course, is an unknown and a totally different ball game. i meant for other things.

for other things we know that there a finite number of days for a deadline. we know that we can only stay awake a certain number of hours. so why don't we just figure out how to calculate and apportion the number of things we have to do into the amount of time that we have?

i know i'm guilty of NOT doing this, veteran crammer that i am. but i guess, when it really comes down to it, i am able to make time for things i consider most important.

like finding the time to draw if the kids ask me to. or read to them. or cook for them and my siblings. there is always time to pick up the phone and listen to a friend who badly needs to talk. there's always time to sit back and admire the way the light streams into our house in the early morning. and time to swap stories with my sisters or my parents.  there is always time to send out a message to say hi, just so people know i thought about them today.

i think, it's not a question of whether there is enough time or not. it's all about making time, but before that, picking out those matters that we have to make time for. everything else will follow and one need not worry about running out of time for other things.

then i suppose you can pat yourself on the back for getting everything done. and you count yourself lucky if the people you care about and make time for make time for you too.
